Action!

Imagine if you will, a phone conversation that I had yesterday between my dear husband (DH), his "boss" (the man I told you about that has come to work with him for a few days), and myself.
*****Act 1, at home, about 4:30 PM*****
phone rings
DH-- Hi, it's me. Have you started making dinner yet?
me-- Yes, I'm almost done.
DH-- Is it something that can keep?
me-- I guess so, why?
DH-- Boss and his family want to take us out to eat.
---------------------
I interrupt this story to let you know that we have not eaten a meal at home since Wednesday, the 12th. (See previous two posts) I was really looking forward to eating together at home this night.
---------------------
me-- Okay. I wasn't planning on going anywhere, so it may take me a little bit to get ready. What time will we be going out?
DH-- Well, we have to finish up here; let me ask how much longer it will be.
DH-- Boss said it will be at least a few hours.
me-- A few hours!! That will be really late!
DH-- Well, give the kids a snack.
me-- Okay. Is this something that they're paying for, or are we going Dutch?
DH-- Hold on, Boss is saying something....
boss-- That would be really late.....we'll just go to your house.
DH-- Boss says that we'll just all eat at our house.
me-- ****Alarm bells ringing**** OUR HOUSE?!! The grocery stores have been closed for almost a week and we don't have very much food in the house. I had to scrape together ingredients to make something for us for dinner. What am I supposed to make? I don't have enough time for this!!! (And I'm sure some other hysterical ramblings-----gracious, huh?)
DH-- Tell you what, I'll come home and take you to the grocery store and then come back to work.
me-- We don't have time to go grocery shopping, come home, and still make a meal before guests arrive.
*****thinking, thinking, thinking*****
me-- Okay, I think I have enough stuff to double what I was already making. It's a new recipe though, so I hope it tastes good. DH, can you come home and help get the house clean?
DH-- Okay, I'm on my way.
*****Act 2: at home, 5:30 PM*****
me-- Dinner's almost ready, I just need to know what time we're going to eat so I know when to put it in the oven.
DH-- Wait, my phone is ringing....
DH-- That was boss, he says his wife decided to just stay at the hotel with their son.
me-- WHAT?!? Look at all this food!! Well, I hope you guys like it, because it's what we'll be eating for the rest of the week! (gracious again, huh?)
me-- Okay, just find out what time we'll be eating.
DH-- (after another call to boss) He won't be done until after 8:00, so he and I will come and eat when we're done. You and the kids go ahead and eat now.
me-- Okay, I'll see you when you're done with work.
*****Act 3: at home, 10:00 PM*****
(Here's my big chance to redeem myself!)
me-- (on the phone with DH) Are you coming home soon?
DH-- We only have a little bit longer.
me-- Why don't you see if there's one of the single guys who'd like to come and eat too---there's plenty of food.
DH-- Okay, I'll ask.
*****Act 4: calling from work, 10:45 PM*****
DH-- We're on our way.
me-- Okay, who's we?
DH-- Myself, boss, Mr. M, & Mr. G.
me-- Okay, I think there's enough for one more. I'll see you soon.
----------------------------------------
11:00 at night I was finally able to serve my reheated dinner to 4 hungry, grown men; and there was just enough for everyone. They also found it a treat to have some of my homemade bread and sweet, iced tea (something you can't get out here).
I was so glad that the Lord showed me something half-way through this fiasco. I could use this opportunity to be a crown to my husband. To make him proud that I am his wife. To cheerfully serve these men and let them see what a true Christian spirit looks like. I have never had a happier time doing the dishes---just knowing that by doing them I was serving my husband and making him happy. And I was able to bask in the conversation when they were bragging about what an amazing job my DH does at work. I feel one step closer to my goal of that Proverbs 31, virtuous woman. I feel that I was able to help my husband as in verse 23 of that passage, "Her husband is known in the gates, when he sitteth among the elders of the land."
It was a good, long night!

For dinner---it was some kind of Shepherd's Pie with brown gravy mix stirred into the beef (no tomatoes), mixed veggies on top of that, and mashed potatoes all over. I had already roasted some fresh beets earlier in the day, so there were plenty of those to go around. It turned out pretty well!

You're wonderful.

The situation? Not so much! Really quite unbelievable. I'll have to remember this because I'm sure, sure, sure I would not have been so gracious.

I would have just uninvited them; of course, how do you uninvite someone you never invited in the first place?

lol.

That is a great story. I know your crowns in heaven are just shining so brightly. I have had sometimes where things came up unexpected and looking back I wish I had done what you did. Now I will remember this story for those days for us.
