Bad Neighborhood

We went on another hunt for the church yesterday, and we didn't like what we saw. We didn't actually see the church itself, but we found the road it was supposed to be on. It looks like a very bad neighborhood. We're talkin' back alley New York City in the middle of the night. Except this was the middle of the day on a main street. The first thing my husband said was, "You're never coming here by yourself." We would have kept looking for the church building except it was a one way street, so we couldn't just turn around. And, as I mentioned before, the traffic is very bad and people are rude and impatient, so you can't just drive slow and look leisurely out the window for what you need. Plus, in that part of town, we didn't really want to drive slow anyway! I did get to see a different side of town though, so that was interesting. One part that we went through had a lot of Greek Orthodox people. They still wear clothing styles from several hundred years ago in Eastern Europe. I can't even begin to describe it -- it looks like they're wearing a costume. I suppose it's rude to take a picture of them, but if I ever get the chance to discreetly snap a shot, I'll try. We also drove by the section of the Old City called the Muslim Quarter. We drove by very close to the walls and got to see them up close. These walls were built in the 15oo's to enclose the original city of Jerusalem. So much history in those blocks of stone. Some of the walls are covered in bulletholes from the wars in 1947-8 and 1967. I can't wait to see all of these things up close.
