I've heard of quilts being made out of children's clothing as a memory of their childhood. I like the idea behind this, but I hate the idea of cutting up clothing that could be passed on for someone else to use. I'm not so sentimental that I can justify wasting like that. But, I have the advantage of having extra fabric from the things I've made. Since I had the idea a few years ago I've been storing away scraps from the clothes I've made. I'm mad at myself that I didn't think of this sooner, because there's some fabric that I didn't save. :( This weekend I finally got around to DOING something with all this fabric. Surprisingly, it only took a few hours to have them all done! I wanted something on each block that would somewhat resemble the dress itself, so my creativity got to show a little. I also have pictures of her wearing most of these dresses, so I will be able to print these pictures on cloth, and add them to the finished quilt. I think I'll keep making these squares until she's 16, and then give the finished quilt to her as a keepsake for her hope chest. But, those plans could always change before then. The pictures below are the blocks I've made so far. If you click on the picture, you'll be able to see a lot of detail. I've also included pictures of a couple of them up close, and a picture of her at 3 with my dad (she's wearing one of the dresses). You'll have to disregard the threads and uneven edges, they won't show in the final quilt. I'd love to know what you think!

PAM!!! What an awesome idea!!! Boy, I wish I had the talent and patience to sew!!! My daughter had most of her dresses and clothes made for her by my pastor's wife at our old church and she still wears some of them, so I can totally relate to the concern for modesty! You are one talented lady! God bless you!

What a beautiful idea. I love it! I've been planning to make a quilt using old T-shirts that have logos from places we've visited. But, your idea is so much lovlier.
Pam it is such a joy to read your blog. I look every day and every day you say something that warms my heart. A wonderful project you have started and one that your little girl will cherish!! Still praying for the biopsy. Sorry I don't post much but I do read :-)

It's good to see all of you come out of the shadows and leave a comment!
Sarah, you tried making bread and found out it was easier than you thought -- maybe you'd have the same experience with sewing. It's worth a try.
Tammi, welcome! I think t-shirts from places you've been would make a wonderful quilt; it would definitely hold a lot of memories for both of you. BTW -- do I know you personally? I can't place the name.
Laura!!! WooHoo!! You're always welcome to leave a comment here! I see you "lurking" around on my stat counter, so I know you're here. I'm glad you read; and I'm even more glad when I hear from you. Thank you for your prayers about the biopsy! They are greatly appreciated.
That is such a sweet idea!!
Of course you would think of such a wonderful thing to make! You are so creative..and what a sweet idea to keep sewing these for a future keepsake. ADORABLE! I'll have to come up with a poem for you to print on material and maybe sew into the quilt..whatta ya think? or maybe YOU will come up with a poem? I know you can...
It's always a blessing to see how resourceful you are and how much joy you find in the simple things of life..and the contentment..in whatsoever state you are! AMEN..
Hugs...
I save our 'scraps' from the dresses we make, too, and hope to one day venture out and try quilting. I LOVE how you personalized the squares and LOVE the idea of adding the pics. Thanks so much for sharing.
You did a wonderful job on the squares. I'm sure she will absolutely treasure it when you give it to her.
