Intricate Cross-Stitch

I've mentioned my massive Cross-Stitch project in the past, but it's been about 8 months since I've explained about it or posted an updated picture. I've gained some new readers since then, so I'll take this opportunity to quickly explain what it is I'm undertaking.
You can see some examples of my cross-stitching from my profile picture and my header. I like these projects, but I was looking for more of a challenge. That's how I came to find Golden Kite's patterns. These are the most intricate, beautiful patterns I've ever seen and I knew I had to do one for myself. Actually, I bought 3 patterns, but I'm afraid it might take me a lifetime to finish them all! The patterns are done so well that the finished project looks like a painting, with no back stitching or empty spaces at all. This is the pattern I am currently working on....
It is called "A Moment Of Rest". It is being done on 18 count Aida cloth and the finished design will be 17.75 X 21.5 inches. It has 320 stitches by 388 stitches, for a total of 124,160 stitches. Each 3/4 in. square has 100 stitches in it! There are 84 different colors; some used individually, and others blended together (1 thread from each of 2 colors).
As you can imagine, it is taking quite some time to complete (especially since I put it away for about a year!). I've determined to work on it more faithfully though so that I can get it completed while I'm still young enough to do the work. The last time I posted a picture of my progress was in December of last year. This is where I was at that time....
Today I finished up the top row of pattern pages, which means I'm finished with the majority of the sky! I've put a 12 in. ruler in the picture so you can get an idea of the size....
It's been in my Q-snap frame for a long time, so that's the reason for all the wrinkles at the moment. If you click on these pictures you can get a really good look at the stitches.

If/when I finish this, I have these two patterns waiting for me to get started on next....

If you're still reading this blog a few decades from now, you might see these works completed!

For now I am just thrilled to have gotten this far. As my dear friend Laura would say, this project is like eating an elephant.... you just have to take one bite at a time.

It's gorgeous! I'm working on one that's not quite as detailed, but the most detailed I've ever done. I've been working on it for . . . ahem . . . ten years! LOL

So keep it up! ;)

Those are so beautiful and when you finish you will have something much more valuable than an expensive painting. Have a great day. connie from Texas

I agree...the value of it when finished will have no price...an heirloom for your daughter! And what a great lesson for her on persevering! There are many lessons that can be taught in this wonderful project!

Those are going to be beautiful when you are done. Think of the satisfaction you will have when they are finished. :)

Pam:
Don't feel bad. I have a cross stitch still in progress- and the magazine it's from is dated 1986! To be fair, I didn't start it until some time in the 90's, and I also set the project aside... for about 10 years. I guess it wouldn't kill me to step away from the sewing machine for a time and do a little more stitching. You would laugh at the design, though- it's not nearly as complex as yours! You would think that I could finish it in less than a decade. Hmmph. Guess not.

That is soooo amazing! I have always wanted to learn cross-stitch, just get intimidated by the detail of the advanced projects! ;) Maybe someday, when my baby isn't much of a baby, I could attempt something like that... Someday, life will slow down--or that is what I have been told! ;) God bless you Pam--I hope that all is well with you and your wonderful family!
Sincerely,
Sarah T
