I enjoyed the last "survey" I posted, so I thought I would do another....
In the next couple of weeks we will be headed back to the United States for a short visit. Besides the obvious things that occupy your mind when you move such as, packing, canceling utilities, and the house's final cleaning, we have something else taking up our thoughts. In fact, we're so engrossed by it that we've started a list. A list of places that we want to GO! We haven't lived in the U.S. in about 5 years, and in that time we've only visited the States twice; the last time being 2 years ago. There are so many places that we miss.... mainly restaurants!
The very first place we will go when we get to the States is Wal-Mart. I think that is the obvious one; most of you would probably say the same! The Wal-Mart in the town we'll be in is a Super Center that is open 24/7, so we might even stop by on our way from the airport! HA! As much as I miss that place, I know that once I step inside those double sliding doors I will start feeling overwhelmed. Do you realize how many choices you have in a place like that? A "simple" task like buying shampoo takes me at least 30 minutes... it takes so long to look over all the products, many of them being new things I've never seen before. Two things we know that we will be purchasing there are : bacon & extra-sharp cheddar cheese... my kids get really excited when we tell them that! (Okay, the grown-ups do too!)
After Wal-Mart we will be stopping at Arby's, the restaurant we miss the most. With the rising cost of food I doubt they still have their "5 for $5" deal, but we're willing to pay a little extra. Besides, coming from the land of the $8 Happy Meal, nothing in the States will seem overpriced!
So, here's my question for you..... If you were away from the U.S. for several years, where would be the first few places YOU would go?

I remember how overwhelmed I was returning from Switzerland! While lviing there at that time..most things I made were from scratch also...and the choices in the stores...maybe 3 cereals or two cake mixes! When I first went to the grocery store on return..just the cereal aisle was too much..it is still! LOL Imagine having TWO ailes of just box after box of CEREAL!
So...my choice then was a TACO! My little friend from Papua New Guinea (missionary) her's is always a BURRITO!
Funny how FOOD comes to your mind first! and brings memories with it.
Food, Fellowship
that's what we missed.
Hmmm.....I think McDonalds and Walmart would be good choices. I also love my local Cato's. It's the only place we can find ready made MODEST skirts at a reasonable price. But I do wish that sometimes we didn't have so many choices. I sometimes long for the simple life. That isn't too strange I guess.
I have not had the opportunity to travel to another country yet, but I can still dream.
Oh, yes! I forgot. Arby's does still have the deal, but it is now 5 for $5.99 (?)( not sure of the exact price.) They have a pepperjack melt and the regular melt I think.
May God bless you with safe traveling grace.
Yep they still have that at Arbys and yes it is 5 for $5.95 sometimes the pepper jack ones sometimes with melted cheese but you can always ask them to leave it off, we do on a cheep meal night.
Pam too funny about walmart. I say that because when we landed in LA when we returned state side after 3 years we got our rental and headed on the road and stopped at the first walmart we saw, heheheheh.
Now where would I go first , well I do know of a wonderful dinner here in cali called Rachaels and Jennys. You soooo have to stop by and try it out because I know you would love it, hehehhehe.
Ok please over look my brain dead spelling today, heheheheh. I'm a dork.
Wal Mart for sure! Actually, we are taking an over night bus to Argentine tomorrow to renew VISA and there is a Wal Mart there!!!!!
The first place we go when we're in the southern US is either Sonic or Cracker Barrel. My favorite clothing store is Christopher & Banks. We live near the border of the US/Canada, so we can get to a C&B occasionally. Next on the list is Bath & Body Works, which is in the mall just across the border too. And we do our once-a-month grocery shopping trip at the first Super WalMart across the border!
I don't think most Americans appreciate just how much CHOICE we have. Even after living in Australia - very like the USA in many, many ways, and with no shortage of material goods, I was still overwhwlmwed when we came back. The sheer expanse of the cereal isle of an American grocery store is beyond compare. I think, on our first grocery trip after we came back, we left the store with about 10 different kinds of 'old favorites' cereals.
My first choice would me Romano's Macaroni Grill Resturant.
I also love sharp cheese. Wal-mart carries Cabot Extra Sharp White cheese and it is sooooooo good and even better with garlic Tiscuts.
I hope you enjoy your time in the U.S.
Carrie
P.S. Do you know the Adam Boyd family??
I love the breakfasts at Cracker Barrel so I would really miss that place but to be honest if I was away from the US.the first place I would want to go is to where ever my children and Grandchildren were. I know that is not the places you are speaking about but that is where I would head first thing. Hope you enjoy your time here. connie
I would definitely hit Mcdonalds and Walmart!
Hmmm, for us we missed Wal-Mart, Cracker Barrel and Krystal's the most. I also missed JoAnn's and thrift stores. After being back in the states for a while, I now loathe going to Wal-Mart. There really are just too many options there. When I do go, I have a specific list of items and that is all I look at. If I allwoed myself to look around I would be spending way too much time and money there on "stuff" that I really don't need. I would however suggest Lowes or Home Depot to get some things for your next house. Oh how I missed having somewhere like that when we were in Oki. Would have made that sterile base housing much more cozy. =)
Oh, and of course you must go to Lambert's.
CHICK-FIL-A!!! :) and Ross!!
Those were the first two things that came to my mind.. It had been almost two years since Amanda and I had been to the States...
Mom and Dad were out of the States for three years..with no visits in between. Mom says: Walmart and a good steak from a good steakhouse! :)
Jess
Having lived overseas 11 years...whew I know the overwhelming feeling..I was excited to see EVERYTHING....I love the Olive Garden, that would be a choice for me...and fabric stores....also TARGET is a favorite store....and just plain old grocery shopping...and reading signs all in English...
so excited for you.
Deby
Carrie, do I know you? Maybe we met in our travels along the way to here.
My firsts would be Braums, Sonic, anything with a decent drive-thru! Wal-Mart, Michaels, JoAnns, Hobby Lobby...Okay, I need to get back to reality!
