STUFF

We officially have too much. How is it that we can accumulate so many things... and then somehow still feel the need for more? If you haven't guessed, our shipment arrived this week. We're making good progress on getting things put away, but we still have a few days work ahead of us. The kitchen is the hub of our home, so that's the room I started with. As soon as my pot rack is hung on the wall it will be complete. I sorted as I went and I have two boxes full of kitchen items to give away. Did you know that "tupperware" multiplies when left alone in the cupboard? It's true.... how else would I end up with so much of it?
I've found all of my souvenirs and, praise the Lord, none of them were broken. I was prepared to let go just in case, but God was merciful :) In fact, so far, nothing is broken.... what a blessing! I have found a few instances of ridiculous packing though. Some of my paper items were bent, clothing left hanging out of boxes and then taped over, but the most annoying by far was what I found yesterday. I was unrolling something wrapped in paper and, thankfully, was being very careful just in case the item(s) would fall out. It turned out to be my husband's folding knife... which has a 6 inch blade, like something you'd take hunting, and is very sharp. This wouldn't be a big deal except it was OPEN. As far as we can figure, the mover in Jerusalem must have started "playing" with it and couldn't figure out how to close it. So instead of asking, he just wrapped it up. I'm very glad I didn't drop it out of the paper into my foot!
One surprising fact I discovered was the amount of sewing items I own. After the kitchen, my sewing supplies filled the most boxes. Sewing machine, serger, notions, & fabric.... about 8 large boxes full, not including my table, cabinet, & shelves. It's a good thing I have a whole room for it all. I need to start thinning out my supplies though.... our future homes might not be so spacious.
Here's a question for you..... if you were only going to live somewhere for 1 year, would you take the time to hang up all of your pictures and decorations? Keep in mind, when you leave you have to take it all down and patch all the holes!

I probably would hang up some of my stuff, I couldn't live with bare walls! It needs to feel like home!

no way...I've been here 14 months, and I still haven't hug one thing on the wall. Except where there was already a nail. And I'm here for the long haul.

I'm glad you've finally received you things....sorry about the poor packing job.....what a shame.

Ahhhh....get this! The word verification below says "paine".

Appropriate, huh?

Oh yes, we would hang things up. We would go for 3-6 months and hang some 'special' things up. It gave the children a sense of home, and we are here for a while. Then we moved on and hung things up in another place. To my husband, bear walls meant hotel, and stark living. He wanted a home at each location we stayed.

Hmm, that's a hard one. I definitely like having things on the walls, but painting and patching are hard work! We've done things both ways - decorated and not decorated. Maybe you could just hang the most important things? I guess you have to determine if it's important to You and worth your time. Good luck!

I would definitely hang a few things. However, we live here a year and a half before the first picture got hung. I guess I would wait a while and see if you miss it, if not then don't bother.

I wouldn't feel moved in until some stuff is on the walls. Start with favorites, and go from there. Every time we have moved, we have been hanging pictures by bedtime! Have to have stuff up to make it "ours".

you may try leaning a few things on end tables near walls if you dont want to hang...

also.. my mother in law has a great trick for hanging anything.. she uses sewing needles.. believe it or not they are very strong they leave a very small hole and will hold up to 40 or so pounds..

I loved your post. I am so thankful that your things got there unbroken.

I would put everything up because for me, we have no promise of tomorrow, just today. It would be our home and I would want those things hung up just so we would know we were "at home." Just my feelings, yours could be different. Have a wonderful year or what ever time the Lord has you there. connie

I love the Tupperware note!!! too funny! I wish mine would grow I could use more!

YES...I would hang pics or wallhanings!...HOME is what you make it wherever you are even for a year.... I've read where you can fill holes with TOOTHPASTE and it hides well. Even just a couple makes the room cozy.

If you hang ONE bulletin board in the kids room..they can hang lots of stuff from it and have fun also.

You can hang my calligraphy!! and remember the scriptures speak to visitors!

Hugs..

It was so much harder to hang things on walls that are not drywall.

So, I understand if you don't hang up things.

Where are you going to church while there? What kinds of churches are there (evanngelical)?
